PENRYN 6 - TRURO 1
Penryn finally found their form when they fired in six goals to take all three points at home to Truro City Reserves. It was a marked change in fortune for the home side who have struggled to recapture the form that saw them finish fourth last season. No-one has done more to try and inspire his team to victory than joint player-manager, Dale Band and it was he who opened the scoring for Athletic after five minutes when he capitalised on a hasty ball out of defence to seize possession before running in behind the defence and firing a shot across Jason Peters in the City goal. The keeper got a hand to the ball but could not prevent the shot from nestling in the bottom corner.
Penryn's open approach to the season so far hasn't reaped the rewards expected so for this game Ben Oliver was called up from the Reserves to form a five man defence. It looked as though the extra cover wasnt working early on though as Penryn put themselves under pressure by conceding too many corners. Jack Greenwood was also finding too much room on Penryn's left which resulted in him hitting s tinging shot that Steve Raven did well to save. It looked like being the same old story for Athletic moments later when Greenwood sent over a corner which Ben Williams headed back across goal for skipper Andy Van Evelingen to stab in from close range.
Truro were starting to look good at this stage b ut the game swung back Penryn's way just before half time. Pat Shaughnessy's over hit corner was headed back into play by Hugh Howlett for Oliver to force the loose ball over the line. The visitors were then dealt another blow just after the restart when Shaughnessy cut in from the left before firing past peters from a narrow angle. And within another minute it was game over as Athletic added their fourth. Shaughnessy was again involved, hitting a corner for Hal Davis to fire in.
For the first time this
season penryn were now cruising to victory and it was to get better when Steve
Warr hadded a fifth. Sean Johnston was the provider as he hit a low cross
which peters made a mess of trying to cut out allowing Warr the simplest of
finishes. With fifteen minutes remaining Athletic sent on their three substitutes,
Darren Edwards, Bryn Wheeler and Mark Goldsworthy. However, it was a familiar
name that added the sixth. A Shaughnessy corner was hit goalwards by Davis.
It deflected off Band's thigh and into the net for the player manager's second
goal of the game.
