PENRYN ATHLETIC 2 - TRURO CITY 0
Penryn moved into the third round of the Cornwall Senior Cup after they comfortably beat a youthful Truro City side thanks to a goal from player-manager Dale Band and a thunderous free-kick from Hal Davis. Athletic became early favourites in the tie when Band's inswinging cross flew over Truro keeper Ross Brooks and into the back of the net after only two minutes.
Man-of-the-Match Band then had Truro open again as he played in Sean Johnston on 20 minutes. However, as he rounded Brooks the striker was clipped by the keeper and went down. The referee looked to his linesman for help with the decision, but he was behind play and despite the home team's annoyance the official pointed for a goal kick. Davis was next to go close for Penryn as he pulled down a corner before hitting the side netting.
After the break Greg Hobbs came on for his first appearance of the season replacing Pat Shaughnessy. However, Truro were still well in the match and made sure Steve Raven was alert in goal on a couple of occasions. Jamie Thirkle had a great chance to collect victory midway through the half, but after he rounded Brooks he could only fire the ball wide of the target from an acute angle.
With ten minutes to go
Penryn were awarded a free-kick 30 yards from goal and Davis stepped up to
send a thunderbolt of a shot crashing in off the underside off the crossbar
to end any hopes of a City equaliser.
