ST AUSTELL 3 - PENRYN ATHLETIC 1

The visitors started the game the better side and were in front after only five minutes when pat Shaughnessy was bought down in the box by Dan Lean which allowed Hal Davis to score from the penalty spot. However, the home side equalised minutes later when the ball deflected into the path of Chris Phillips who drove into the bottom corner from 15 yards out.

Pete Maclean then saw his shot narrowly go wide as Athletic continued to dominate the opening exchanges. However, the home side battled away and it became a fiery encounter between the two high-flying sides. Shaughnessy was booked for dissent midway through the half and Athletic thought they should have been awarded another penalty when matt McIlroy was sent tumbling in the box but the referee waved away the appeals.

Lee Whetters who was sent off in the Saints midweek match against Callington which was abandoned went close fro the home side but his shot went narrowly over. A free kick from Shaughnessy then found Pete Davey at the back post only for him to head wide. Goalscorer Davis was then on hand to clear off the line after Mike Body and Jay Isbell combined well.

The second half saw St Austell taking control and when a Phillips shot was deflected behind for a corner they made their possession count from the set piece. Isbell crossed to the middle of the goal where Whetters met the ball to head into the back of the net. Raven then saved well as former Penryn player, Damien Mulready fired an effort at goal follwoed by a header from Phillips which was just wide of the mark.

Whetters was almost in hot water for the second game in succession when he was involved in an off the ball incicent with Adam Pryer but he escaped punishment. McIlroy then set up Johnston who shot over before Shaughnessy saw one of his efforts cleared off the line by Bradley Walsh. Scoley could have pulled Penryn level when Penhaligan dropped a corner but unfortunately he shot over the bar. This allowed St Austell to close the game out when Dan Magee found substitute James Chapman who fired past Raven on the counter attack.
