5 – Saltash United 4
The visitors took an early lead
when Neil Kennedy played a short pass, which Mike Roberts intercepted and
crossed for Gareth Jones to beat Andy Avery at close range. However, in less
than a minute Penryn’s Darren Burchell beat two defenders and put Matthew
Drummond through to score.
Avery pulled off two great saves
from Paul Baker and Roberts and after ten minutes the home side edged in front
when Adam Trudgian’s corner was cleared to the edge of the box where
Burchell’s first time shot screamed inside the upright for a fine goal.
But the lead didn’t last
and five minutes later Saltash were on level terms when the home team were
caught square at the back for Jones to lob the keeper. However, Penryn regained
the lead when Trudgian’s corner caused panic in the Ashes’ defence
for Dave Wilkinson to get the final touch to score.
During the second half of the game
United equalised in the fifty-sixth minute when Adam Holland was ruled to
have pushed Roberts in the box leaving Brian Jefferis to score from the spot.
Both sides worked hard for another goal and after seventy minutes Burchell
put Jamie Thirkle away and after cutting in, shot past Simon Zinn who had
come out to narrow the angle.
The home side gained a 5-3 lead
when Kennedy’s corner sailed straight in the Ashes’ net. Unfortunately
Drummond and Jefferis joined Steve Murphy in the ref’s book before Saltash
added a further goal to their tally in injury time when Baker was ruled to
have been tripped from behind and Jones converted the spotkick to complete
his hat-trick bringing the score-line up to 5-4.
