PENRYN ATHLETIC 3 - PORTHLEVEN 3
The home side had to fight back
from a 2-0 defecit to gain equal points from this excellent game of football
for the first match of the new season.
Right from the kick off, which was delayed due to the late arrival of the referee, there was little to choose from between the two sides. Despite probing crosses in the box at both ends, defences were well on top as the strikers struggled to make any headway. Kevin Lawrence had the visitors' first chance but his side was just wide of the upright. Sid Taylor had to come to Porthleven's rescue getting down low to beat Steve Warr's long range shot from the corner.
The visitors took the lead in the 21st minute when a brave header by Hugh Howlett found Steve Brewer who pushed the ball out to Westgarth who appeared to be a offside position. He then cust in towards goal and as Andy Butcher came out to narrow the angle he chipped the ball into the top corner of the net.
Just six minutes later the visitors again scored when Steve Brewer followed the line of a diagonal cross to allow it to skim off his head from Holland's free kick and go in at the near post. The home side were not to crushed and in the 44th mintue Martin Day brought down Matt Drummond on the edge of the box but Dean Harris' subsequent free kick was charged down. Another promising attack saw Adam Trudgian lif the ball in for Drummond and his on target shot forced another fine save from Taylor. Good work from Vice Captain, Matt Moore, saw Drummond in on goal again but he could only find the side netting.
Six minutes into extra time the home side hit back when a quick break from Drummond saw him cut in from the edge of the box and hit a fine, low drive inside the post. Just two minutes into the second half the home side equalised when a Drummond corner found its way to Stidwell who composed himself before drilling the ball through a crowded goalmouth past Taylor.
Matt Moore
had two great shots save by Taylor and in the 54th minute the latter went
out for a corner. Warr's cross looked too deep but Peter Davey thumped it
back for Stidwell to get a touch and divert it past Taylor. Unfortunately
the home side could not retain the lead and in the 65th minute Lawrence picked
up a pass from Brewer and cut in to hit a terrific 20 yard shot into the top
corner of the net.
