The visitors were full value for their victory and were first to go close with a snap shot from captain Sean Johnston. Jamie Thomson then replied for Porthleven with a shot of his own before Athletic started to dominate proceedings. They forced a succession of corners midway through the half and it was from one of these in the 24th minute that they should have been given the lead. Pat Shaughnessy provided the corss and as the ball dropped to the back post a melee ensued. Jamie Thirkle got a telling boot to the ball but his shot appeared to be blocked by a hand before Hal Davis then bundled the ball just over the line. However, the referee who, through a crowd of players, failed to get a clear view of either incident waved play on.

Porthleven's Matt Fox then hit back as he latched onto a ball from Tom Wadsworth and raced down on goal. However, he shot wide. Penryn began to pressurise from all quarters, but were equally as woeful in front of goal as player-manager Dale Band shot wide, Hal Davis hit over and Shaughnessy set himself up to miss the best of the three chances. As a result it was a penalty that broke the deadlock and it came for Penryn on 39 minutes when Shaughnessy was brought down in the box by Terry Rowe.

Hal Davis, a reliable penalty kick taker for Athletic stepped up a fire home his 10th goal of the campaign. Penryn continued to press and leading up to half time Shaughnessy. Hugh Howlett and Jame Thirkle all had efforts saved by Richard Pennington. Penryn did double their lead 11 minutes after the restart. Former Porthleven player Thirkle was the provider as he crossed a dangerous ball into the box.

Mike Newbury attempted to cut out the cross but it ran off him into the path of Shaughnessy who drilled it in from six yards out. There was still long time to play out and in the last quarter Porthleven, who have made many late comebacks this season started to rally. In the 80th minute they were given hope as Steve Raven failed to hang onto a corner from Jamie Thomson allowing Rowe to hook the ball over his head and under the crossbar as the covering defenders tried to get back. However, Penryn kept thier concentration in the final ten minutes to reduce Porthleven to few chances, making sure they took all three points back to Kernick.
