PERRANPORTH 1 - PENRYN ATHLETIC 0

This was an important win for Perranporth who have all the credentials to go on and stake a claim for the championship. However, Athletic, who themselves are in the hunt for the title this season, will be disappointed with the result and performnce as the home side were quicker into the tackle throughout.

In fact the over zealous approach from Dean Harris earned him a booking in the first minute as he brought down Athletic's Dave Blizzard with a bad challenge which forced the Cornwall U18 player to leave the field of play midway through the first half.

Penryn's only look at goal in the first half came when Sean Johnston blazed over when well placed. The much travelled Steve Brewer should have put Perran in front on 22 minutes but he rolled a guilt-edged chance wide of the post when facing a one-on-one situation with keeper, Steve Raven. Jamie Burr then had to clear off the line as Mike Davies fired at goal.

The breakthrough and winning goal came in the 32nd minute when Kevin Lawrence, formerly of Porthleven, had plenty of room to turn and lift a fine cross for Harris to steer an excellent header into the top left hand corner from 15 yards out. With the wind at their backs Athletic had more of the second half but still the partnership of Justin Harrington and Ian Gosling controlled the midfield against Athletic's Dale Band and Hal Davis.

Penryn did have a chance to steal a point from the game right at the end when substitute, Pat Shaughnessy cut in from the touchline. He raced to the edge of the six-yard box but, instead of electing to square the ball to team mates better placed in the centre, he struck the ball into the side netting. Shaughnessy then fired another effort wide as Burrows failed to get a decent clearing punch on a cross from Darren Burchell.
