PENRYN ATHLETIC 1- NEWQUAY 3

Both sides were well below strength for this clash. Athletic, hit by injuries and unavailability and both sides hit by the Cornwall Youth squad, put on a good show despite their patched up squads. it was newquay who were the better in both halves as they looked the more dangerous and busy side with their work rate a feature of the game.

Athletic had a scare early in the first minute then Luke Weldhen's wind-assisted shot thumped against the bar and then Sean Middleton went close when he sidefooted the ball over the bar from 15 yards. Dan Magee was prominent for newquay by supplying a string of fine crosses throughout the game but both goals survived until the forty-first minute when Newquay broke the deadlock. Former Athletic player, Lee Bradd flicked on a pass for Steve Kellow to run onto and he made no mistake with a well-directed shot inside Andy Butcher's post.

Athletic enjoyed their brightest patch early in the second half and looked to have won a penalty when Jamie Marles was impeded, but the referee thought otherwise. The only outcome was yellow card for Adam Trudgian for contesting the decision. The home side got back on level terms in the fifty-second minute when Mike Brewer's free kick eluded everyone in the goalmouth for Trudgian to jump under pressure and loop his header over Bill Hollands and just inside the post.

The goal failed to deter Newquay who quickly regained their poise and in the sixty-seventh minute when Bradd went on a marauding run upfield and as Butcher came out to narrow the angle Bradd fired his shot across him and inside the far post. A lack of concentration from a free kick led to a third goal for the visitors in the seventy-second minute when Josh Harris took the ball wide of Butcher and rolled it back into an empty goal.
