PENRYN ATHLETIC 2 - MILLBROOK 3

This was a shock defeat for Penryn who were made to pay for committing too many men forward against an improved bottom of the table Millbrook side. The visitors, whose last win in the league came against Athletic in the Autumn used their counter-attacking ability well and capitalised on a couple of defensive errors from high-flying Penryn.

It started well for the home side as they ripped into their opponents in the opening exchanges and took the lead after 6 minutes. A Hal Davis ball through the middle was followed by Chris Davey who headed the ball over keeper Dan Pen-Collins from 10 yards out. However, Penryn were too eager to get the job done and carlessly threw extra men forward looking to kill the game off by half-time.

As a result Millbrook dug in and waited for an opportunity to spring an attack. This moment came on 21 minutes when a short ball was intercepted on the right which led to Chris Curran sending a high ball into the area that Steve Raven failed to gather, allowing Ben Ferguson to fire into the net with the home defence in tatters. However, Penryn successfully recovered and were back in front 6 minutes later when Chris Davey grabbed his second of the match. Following a Sean Johnston run and shot the ball came out to Dale Band who recycled the ball back into the box allowing Davey to head the ball in at the back post.

this should have been enough to see Athletic into the half time interval in front but a poor ball from Darren Edwards on the half way line left the home defence exposed. It was intercepted by Curran who played the ball to Chris Belston who took the ball on without challenge to roll it past Raven for the equaliser. Disaster then appeared to have struck the visitors just before half time when their keeper had to leave the field with a suspected dislocated shoulder.

Ryan Swiggs was brought on from the bench but as he is normally an outfield player it was expected that this change would give Penryn an advantage. However, in the second half they rarely troubled the stand-in keeper and thanks to another defensive error Millbrook were to take all three points.

On 50 minutes the ball was given away on the right hand side where Chris Curran picked up the play before taking on Pete Davey. A rash challenge from the centre back by the byline resulted in the visitors getting the chance to put themselves in front from the spot which they did thanks to a good strike from Ferguson. Millbrook then stuck to their game plan and defended deep against their opponents. penryn had a lot of possession but found it difficult to break down their opponents. Even the introduction of Dave Blizzard and Adam Pryor on 70 minutes could not turn the home side's fortunes and Millbrook came away with a well earnt three points.
