MILLBROOK 1 - PENRYN ATHLETIC 0

This was a niggly game marred by eight bookings and a red card, the first five being handed out to Millbrook players before Athletic began to lose their patience and lack of discipline as a result of too lenient refereeing. On a poorly-prepared pitch Athletic found themselves under the cosh in the first five minutes as Millbrook made a whirlwind start. The visitors struggled under early pressure and following a ball handling incident on the edge of the box John Wyatt took the free kick but could find no way through the packed Penryn wall. After conceding a number of corners Athletic somehow survived and managed to get a much needed foothold in the game.

With some belief instilled into the side it was Athletic's turn to apply the pressure and out of the blue Sam Eglinton put Luke Appleton clear only for the striker to hit his shot wide of the upright. Within ten minutes Athletic had Millbrook on the rack and were convinced they had scored when Eglinton's thumping shot hit the underside of the bar and rebounded over the line before James Gould scooped the ball back out with his hand bugling the net at least a couple of feet behind the line. Minutes later Dale Band had a chance but his snap shot was blazed over the bar.

Andy Butcher did well to make a save at the feet of Ross Avery and it was the latter who became the home side's second booking of the game for dissent. A scything tackle by Chris Yateman floored Shaun Lawrence who, despite attempting to continue, was unable to and had to be substituted. The incident produced a flare up in front of the visiting dugout with Yateman fortunate note to have received a red card for his reckless challenge.

Early in the second half Band made another good attempt but his shot was pushed away for a corner by Gould. Harris struck a free kick that Gould did well to top for a corner after the shot took a deflection. Midway through the half Wyatt breezed through several half hearted tackles by the visiting defence before hitting a terrific low strike past Butcher from the edge of the box.
