PENRYN ATHLETIC 3 - HAYLE 1
Hayle were left with a
mountain to claim after conceding three goals in the first 20 minutes at Kernick
on Saturday. However, player manager Wayne Quinn was encouraged by his side's
second half performance.
The first quarter of the game proved to be a nightmare for the visitors who fell behind after just six minutes when Sean Johnston's shot took a huge deflection off a defender and although keeper paul Hosken got a hand to the ball, he could not prevent it from crossing the line. Three minutes later luck was again not on Hosken's side as he made a fine save to parry Dale Band's fierce drive but Penryn's player manager blasted home the rebound himself from 10 yards.
Hesitation by defender Paul Quinn led to the home side's third goal as Pat Shaughnessy powered his way through the visitors' defence before shooting past Hosken. The visitors nearly pulled a goal back before halftime when Matt Thomas poked his shot narrowly wide. But with Wayne Quinn coming off the bench for the second half Hayle at last started to pose a serious attacking threat.
Scott Jose saw a shot cleared off the line and Thomas had a goalbound shot diverted onto the post before being grabbed by the keeper. Hayle were rewarded for their enterprise on the hour when another Thomas shot hit Penryn defender Pete Davey's hand and Matt Shields neatly tucked away the resulting penalty. Chances came and went at both ends in the final quarter with Jose shaving the home upright and a Thomas shot following a Wayne Quinn corner being scrambled away to safety.
