PENRYN ATHLETIC 2 - HAYLE 4

Two goals in extra time from Hayle's Dan Masgee and Wayne Quinn sent Penryn out of the Throgmorten Cup at the second round. It was a match the hme side should have won having led with just minutes remaining on the clock in normal time. Added to that Penryn also missed a first half penalty and had an effort ruled out for offside.

Most of the action came right at the start and end of the match, with Hayle putting themselves in front with only three minutes gone. Quinn was the provider playing a perfectly flighted corner, which Ryan Stevens headed in at the far post. However, Penryn responded almost immediately with Pete Maclean racing clear and putting the ball in the back of the net oly to be denied by the linesman's flag.

However, a minute later Penryn were level when Pat Shaughnessy played in Dale Band down the right and he crossed perfectly for Maclean to hammer the ball in from three yards out. At this point Hayle were reeling and should have fallen further behind when a Shaughnessy corner was stabbed goalwards by Hal Davis. A covering defender blocked the ball with his arm resulting in a penalty for penryn but Dave Cheal produced an excellent save to deny Davis from the penalty spot.

The second half opened with Hayle's Chis Russell blocking a powerful shot from Hugh Howlett on the line. Midway through the half Athletic brought on Jamie Thirkle to try and find a breakthrough but after being set up by some neat play from Band he could only fire a snap shot off target. However, Penryn did finally get the goal they deserved a minute before the end when Shaughenessy and Band combined to set up new skipper Sean Johnston who fired home from clsoe range.

This should have meant victory for Penryn but Hayle broke down the right with Matt Laity. He crossed to the back post where David Blizzard was outnumbered in defence allowing Danny Williams to slot the ball in for 2-2. The goal that finally settled the tie in extra time was a worthy effort. Magee picked up the ball with 102 minutes played and cut inside his defender before firing a shot into the top right hand corner of Steve Raven's goal. Hayle's scoring was complete in the final minutes when Raven tripped Guy Marshall in the area to allow Quinn to score from the resulting penalty.
