FOXHOLE STARS 1 - PENRYN ATHLETIC 1
Penryn were denied all three points in this bottom of the table clash by an 89th minute goal. They led the heated match from the 10th minute but a goal from Liam Nicholls saw the home side snatch a point as Athletic's difficult start to the season continues.
The visitors were several regulars missing but started the game better. On a much improved surface with the wind at their backs, the visitors went in front when Foxhole failed to clear a bouncing ball in the box and Pete Maclean hammered it past Ryan Holland for 1-0.
From there Penryn looked comfortable at the back with Hugh Howlett and Pete Davey playing well. Nicholls did hit the post from a corner midway through the half but the most contentious issue came when the home crowd appealed for a peantly after the ball struck Davey on the shoulder.
The Foxhole players were incensed by the referee's decision to wave play on, resulting in one of their players being cautioend as he left the filed at the interval for protesting. A fired up Foxhole then came out in the second half looking to put the record straight with Mark Rowe and Chris Gross both sending efforts just wide.
However, Penryn's defence was holding firm, while the home side had trouble keeping a lid on their anger. Egged on by a hostile crowd they began to question and harrass referee, Chris Stevens. Howver, it was Penryn's Adam Pryor who was first to be shown a yellow card when he was booked for a run of the mill challenge.
With no worthwhile attack forthcoming Penryn then rang the changes to try and brighten up the proceedings with another goal. On came Steve Warr, Martin Day and Andrew Heard. However, the pattern of the game did not change and as the dissent continued it became apparent a sending off might be on the cards.
It ended up being Lee Hazeldine, who stretched into a challenge and was shown a yellow card. Angered by the decision he confronted the referee who showed him a second yellow and then a red. Goverseth Park had now become a cauldron of ill-feeling as Foxhole still pressed for an equalizer. They battled hard and Penryn were pegged back into their box for the remaining few minutes.
They got a succession of corners and Steve Raven managed to palm one cross away but it deflected off a Penryn player and fell kindly for Nicholls to fire into the top right of the goal from close range.
