PENRYN ATHLETIC 2 - DOBWALLS 0
Penryn are beginning to move up the CSWPL Division I table following this victory over Dobwalls. The match was in danger of being called off as freezing overnight temperatures left the Kernick pitch frosty in places. At the start of the match it looked like there was going to be plenty of goals on display as Jamie Thirkle missed two good opportunities in the first five minutes.
Dobwalls keeper Jamie Castle was then called into action to turn a fierce Hal Davis free-kick over the top. As the game evened out a ball down the flank from Dobwalls was played inside Will Scoley to Matt Lindsay. He turned his defender to get a shot away but Steve Raven had spotted the danger and rushed to smother the effort from close range.
Just before half time Pete Maclean then played in Dale Band, burt the player-Manager's shot was hurried and wide of the mark. Raven then had to be alert early in the second half as he turned round a free-kick from former Ivybridge midfielder Simon Skews. Lindsay then became the only player to be booked in a well tempered game as he upended Sean Johnston.
Penryn's breakthrough came on the hour mark as Thirkle broke down the right before getting the ball to Pat Shaughnessy in the middle, who could hardly miss from eight yards out with all the goal to aim at. Within seven minutes it was 2-0. Thirkle was the scorer this time as, following a break up of play in midfield, he broke from deep to angle a run to the right side of the penalty area. Castle came out to check his run and block the initial shot, but the ball broke lose and Thirkle was left with the simple task off putting the ball into the net as the keeper lay on the ground.
Gregg Hobbs then came
on for another run out, as did Adam Pryor who freshened things up for the
home side. However, no two players did better in the closing stages than youngsters
David Blizzard and Ben Oliver as they concentrated and battled hard to make
sure they picked up their second clean sheet in a row.
