PENRYN ATHLETIC 4 - CALLINGTON 1
Penryn are into the last eight of the Durning Lawrence Charity Cup after comfortably knocking out Callington Town. A full on performance saw Penryn open the scoring after 45 seconds. Hal Davis was the scorer hitting a tremendous shot from the throw in line near the dugouts, which flew over Rory Fry into the visitors' goal. Callington launched a series of attacks to try and get back into the match but player-manager and former Falmouth Town favourite, Lee Beer gave Penryn the chance to grab a second when he impeded Sean Johnston in the penalty area. Pat Shaughnessy stepped up to take the spot kick but hit it straight at Fry and the ball was cleared.
Callington continued to press for an equaliser but some timely interceptions from David Blizzard and Ben Oliver at the back ketp the home side in front. Dennis Mason did go close on a couple of occasions hitting one good chance over the top when well placed. Meanwhile, Penryn's joint player-manager, Dale Band almost doubled his side's advantage when he turned and hit a shot against the Callington upright. Soon after Band then burst clear but was stopped by the alert Fry who came off his line to smother the ball.
Just after the start of the second half Callington found their breakthrough when paul McAdam broke into the box to hit a strike in off Raven's far post. Callington were now favourites to take the tie but within minutes the visitors found themselves behind again. Sean Johnston was the provider playing the ball into Band who hit a well taken shot past Fry from 15 yards.
In the heaviest conditions seen at Kernick for some time Penryn soon managed to make it three with a little help from the rain. Shaughnessy was the scorer as he darte din from the left to fire a shot at Fry's near post from a tight angle. The keeper should have dealt with the shot but in the slippery conditions he allowed the ball to sneak past him and over the line.
There was a small moment for Callington
when Mason hit the back of the net only for his effort to be ruled out for
offside. Fry was again at fault as he dropped an incoming cross. It fell at
the feet of Shaughnessy who tried to turn and shoot at goal. However, as he
did so the Callington keeper began to clamber over him and both playersend
up on the ground. Band made sure there was no referee's intervention by slamming
the ball into the back of the net, but keeper Fry had to be substituted moments
after the goal as he had picked up an injury as a result of his clumsy challenge
on Shaughnessy.
